The track will be released on the 24th of May on all major streaming platforms and follows hot on the heels of BBC Introducing support for previous track ‘Vampires’.
The band are renowned for creating beautifully constructed lyrics, delivered with a signature blend of falsetto melody lines and anthemic choruses, which are layered over driving rhythmic beats and groove-ridden baselines, all topped off with jangly yet dark, reverb-soaked guitar lines and a pinch of synth.
The music has a cinematic quality that takes you on a captivating but relatable journey with every song. The ease by which By The Waves blends genres is a testament to the diversity of its members and their influences.
Ben Thomas’ vocal range and phraseology is an impressive example of somebody at the peak of their powers, channeling influences from Jim Morrison to Otis Redding and Sting. Sonically beautiful, is the guitar work provided by James Murray whose ability to play infectious riffs and chord structures, inspired by Johnny Marr and Robert Smith, make the songs instantly identifiable.
Pulsating percussion and engaging grooves are provided effortlessly by Luke Finch and provide the metronomic precision and dynamism of players such as Ringo Starr, Jack Bevan & Nathan Followill. His ability to seamlessly spark a shift in tempo lays the perfect backdrop for Hristo Gerdzhikov’s basslines to drive the rhythm section like a steam-train, whilst also lacing additional melodic sounds with his unique approach to the bass.
Like the heartbeat of an Olympic sprinter, he never misses a beat and recalls the essence of the likes of Bootsy Collins to Pino Palladino & Thundercat. With songs that feature multi-lingual vocals written from experiences spent living overseas, By the Waves manage to do what many strive for, but few can achieve: to create something as familiar as a hang out with friends and yet still manage to remain as fresh as a sea breeze on a hot summer’s day.
By The Waves have spent the last 12 months building a growing fanbase with a series of local shows, well received single releases and radio airplay with BBC Merseyside and local tastemakers.
The band will be busy over the next few months with a show at 33 Oldham Street, Manchester on the 8th of June and then a festival slot in Cheshire at Blackthorn Music Festival alongside Chris Moyles 90s Hangover, Tom Zanetti and Gok Wan on the 15th of June.
