The story of Jane and John and ‘Our Year’
“Jane and John are our middle names.”
John is ‘international rock star’ (his words) MJ Hibbett, best known for ‘Hey Hey 16K’ – a no. 1 hit in IT departments, if not the charts.
Jane, otherwise known as CJ Wadsworth, has never been in a band before. The nearest she’s got is singing in a community choir.
Like so many people, they had their plans for 2020 upended by coronavirus. “Stuck in our flat together during lockdown, we wondered – is there something good that could come out of this really difficult time; something we wouldn’t have done otherwise?”
Jane said to John, “You’ve been making indie music for decades – how about writing a proper pop hit? You’ve never done that before!”
So they discussed what the proper pop hit could be about and realised that their experience of 2020 so far – and hopes for a better 2021 – would be something a lot of people could relate to. ‘Our Year’ was born. They decided to co-write it – something they’d never done before in their 20 years together. Before they knew it, they’d formed a band.
John adds, “We recorded ‘Our Year’ in our flat in the Olympic Village, originally home to the San Marino team during the London 2012 Games. Like the previous occupants, we are a small outfit trying to punch above our weight on the international stage.”
