Infinite Music
New Release: ‘A Tribute To La Monte Young’
Out 15th June 2018
Limited edition Magenta coloured vinyl / CD
An entrancing drone experience.
A black magic live collaboration between Spacemen 3’s Sonic Boom, Zombie Zombie’s Etienne Jaumet
and Celine Wadier, a master of Indian Dhrupad singing and tanpura.
La Monte Young made challenging hypnotic pieces of music that lasted hours and days.
Inspired by the sheer size of his native California, he made music that wasn’t timebound. A soundtrack to cover an eight-hour road trip. An examination of music and art that evolved further when he uprooted to New York, embraced the Fluxus art movement, made a dream house of undulating sound and became the inspiration for his students John Cale and original Velvet Underground drummer Angus MacLise.
Exposed to Indian classical music and its meditative state he took the microtonal scale of raga and created intoxicating ever shifting music that in turn inspired others including Steve Reich, Philip Glass, George Harrison, Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker, and the classic Spaceman 3 album Dreamweapon.
Kember and fellow traveller Zombie Zombie’s Etienne Jaumet’s long time interest in La Monte Young provide the organic foil for Celine Wadier’s Indian Dhrupad vocal and tanpura. The result is a mystical journey into La Monte’s psyche, a flowing piece of ever-reducing and evolving Darwinesque minimalism.
The trio integrate a diverse mix of instruments, weaving analogue synths around two voices and manipulating electronics alongside the tanpura and saxophone. Creating a harmonious blend of the old and new informed and influenced Young’s ethos.
The collaboration was originally conceived as part of a 50 year anniversary celebration of The Velvet Underground in Paris in 2016 – invited by Vincent Angladeto join a cast of musicians including John Cale, Television, Martin Rev and Dean Wareham
In ‘Infinite Music’, Boom, Jaumet and Wadier create a consciousness-expanding homage; a heady magical brew, it is an endless open suggestion from somewhere else. Recorded live at Teatro Maria Matos, Lisbon in September 2017. The performance is released on magenta vinyl, a nod to Young and his wife Mariane Zazeela’sfamous light and sound installation at the Dreamhouse, New York.
