LUSTERLIT
Our next show is
THE CURRENT
A Benefit for Everytown for Gun Safety
I’m not used to it. Charlie and I we’re playing Lusterlit shows on our first West Coast tour in 2016. Election Day was when we arrived at Dan and Dany’s in Los Angeles. Old friends reunited! New duo with Charlie travelling for the first time! A new president! It was very exciting. And it stayed exciting. I mean, if you consider nausea exciting. The following days, dumbstruck with the election results, we played shows in LA because we said we would, but we didn’t know if it was the wrong time to play songs about books, the wrong time to do shows. It turns out that it was the right thing to be with audiences who were going through the shock with us. One of these shows was at Alias Book Store organized with songwriter, writer, poet Deenah Vollmer. It was a combination of readings from poets and writers in Deenah’s L.A. community and songs about books from Bushwick Book Club LA Chapter and previous Brooklyn contributors.
It was a Bushwick Book Club show but it was even more than that because of the circumstances. No one told us to do it. We didn’t set out to find therapy. But I think it’s the natural current (sorry!) of people to find what we need and to connect. At that time we needed a way to process what was happening and what we were feeling (i.e. nausea), and we found it. The very basic exchange of people together, expressing and receiving and responding did a lot just to let everyone in the room know we’re not alone, and that we’re going to keep on.
After the inauguration, Deenah and I started doing more of these conglomerate shows, inviting poets, writers, musicians and comedians to perform new pieces inspired by the times, donating proceeds to non profit groups fighting the good fight. The show is called THE CURRENT, we’ve been hosting them on both coasts and and we’ve raised over $2000 for Make the Road New York, Earthjustice, and Everytown for Gun Safety.
March 18th, is our one year anniversary. I hope you can join us. I’m excited for this lineup and for the ways they’re going to change me. Do you hear that, line up? I’m ready! Incredible artists, thinkers and feelers all – Jeffrey Lewis, John S. Hall, Sara Lautman, Air Waves, Lusterlit, Deenah Vollmer, James Yeh, Bob Holman, Jim Andralis and Montana
Thanks and love,
Susan
